Learn how to use a Time-of-Flight sensor to accurately determine distances from the sensor to objects or people

In this 1-hour on-demand webinar we introduce you to Time-of-Flight sensor technology and its many use-cases, along with a new member of ST's FlightSense™ family that offers longer ranging distance with the unique feature of multi-object detection—the VL53L3CX.

A Time-of-Flight (ToF) sensor calculates distance by flashing a small laser light and measuring how long that light takes to strike a target and return. It is a full LiDAR system in a tiny package.

ToF can be used to wake up an application on approach, or to shut it down if it gets too close. It can also be used to turn an application on or off based on external motion or location.

ST's VL53L series are the fastest ToF sensors on the market, with accurate ranging up to 4 m and fast ranging frequency up to 50 Hz. Housed in a miniature and reflowable package, they integrate a SPAD receiving array, a 940 nm invisible Class 1 laser emitter, physical infrared filters, and optics to achieve the best ranging performance in various ambient lighting conditions with a range of cover window options.

Unlike conventional IR sensors, the VL53L uses ST’s latest generation ToF technology which allows absolute distance measurement whatever the target color and reflectance.

You will learn:

  • The main challenges of designing with a ToF sensor and how to overcome them
  • About the VL53L family of digital proximity sensors
  • How to implement a robust, accurate proximity sensor into your design
